At 1:02 a.m. December 6th each year, we sing our way into Paris' room with a loud, rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" and let her open her first gift of being the new year old. This year there was an additional surprise when she awoke....her room (and bed!) was full of balloons. The funny thing about the tradition of waking our kids up at their birth hour on their birthdays is that Sarah and Paris were both born at 1 a.m. but (poor) Fletcher was born at 7 a.m. so he feels so left out on the fun of being woken up in the middle of the night to be sung to (not to mention getting to open a bday gift when it is still dark outside!) So, this will be our first year of adapting the tradition for him...we have discussed many a'time how when his bday rolls around in Jan. we will make it more fun for him (since he is often already up by 7 a.m. on his bday) by waking him up at midnight when it officially becomes Jan.26th. He will get to enjoy the middle of the night festivities not because he was born at that hour but because it is now officially his real bday when the clock strikes midnight!
